Creating Shapefile Files in ArcMap from KML File Generated in My Maps
Abstract:
This document describes a process of digitizing boundaries, generating KML file in My Maps, the KML file will be imported in ArcMap 10.3, and finally, shapefile files will be generated. The processes carried out within My Maps are detailed: delimitation of the study area, digitization of geographic boundaries, and export of KML files; Likewise, the processes carried out within ArcMap are detailed: import of KML file and conversion to shapefile file. Also, two possible digitization cases of the geographical limits within My Maps are shown, solutions to potential errors that may be generated during the process, and finally, an experimental result is presented in which the generated shapefile files will be used to make cuts and analyze information. Compared to digitizing geographic boundaries in ArcMap 10.3, working with My Maps provides better image resolution and a better understanding of the map’s features, which is advantageous when digitizing.
