Critical thinking in elementary social studies text series


Abstract:

Delta Kappan, and Social Education have recently focused on the topic of critical thinking only underscores current interest in this important dimension of learning. Scriven asserts that “training in critical thinking should be a primary task of education”(Scriven 1985). Ennis calls rational thinking (critical thinking or reasoning) the fourth R, adding,“would it not be irrational to neglect the fourth R... in educational practices?”(1981, p. 183). For social studies educators, interest in promoting critical thinking has been high for many years (Unks 1985), but recently this interest has become sharper and more focused.
