Cross-Border Urban Complexes: The Urban Morphology of a Global Structure
Abstract:
The chapter starts from an analysis of urban growth in Latin America and emphasizes the particularities of border cities. These cities are conceptualized as antagonistic spaces of separation (boundary) and integration (border), whose morphology makes it possible to devise a typology of border cities as articulated in cross-border, regional, and/or global urban systems. Furthermore, border cities are also analyzed with regard to the specific type of violence they harbor, which responds to their dual nature: urban and border. Finally, the text addresses the issue of the development of public policies for border areas, where the national security perspective tends to prevail over local needs.
