Crowdsensing and MQTT Protocol: A Real-Time Solution for the Prompt Localization of Kidnapped People

Abstract:

One of the biggest problems that Ecuadorian society and Latin American have to confront in general is insecurity, a condition under which anyone can become a victim. This proposal offers a first step towards linking Ecuador within a new model of security management for smart cities. It takes advantage of new Information and Communications Technologies (ICT), including the Internet of Things (IoT), and Cloud Computing. The main thesis is to develop a real-time communications system that would reduce the time needed to rescue kidnapping victims. The local community would be notified of any kidnapping attempts via their smartphones using an opportunistic application and improving the crowdsensing. This network uses the Message Queue Telemetry Transport protocol (MQTT), which is ideal for IoT applications in which energy consumption is an important factor. The proposed architecture has improved previous works obtaining the reduction of rescue time, achieving 30,3 min in advance to them.
