Culture, science and research: About the value of the cultural factors of science for university research managers

Abstract:

The improvement of the research function in universities and its social role goes hand in hand with the improvement of its ma-nagement, so the incorporation of new management tools is a necessity to lead this process. Among the aspects that should have scientific analysis and modeling for the implementation of the aforementioned management action are the so-called determinants of scientific production. These are some of the mainly identified determinants: institutional, cultural, financial, and professional ones. No other conception of science, technology and innovation approaches in such depth the study of the impact of these determinants on the progress of the university research function as does the Social Studies of Science and Technology. This work is in correspondence with the aforementioned interdisciplinary approach and makes special mention of the importance and incidence of cultural determinants in the development of university research and scientific production. As an additional element, some ideas are presented on how they are being addressed in the policy and management of the research function at the Universidad Regional Autónoma de Los Andes (UNIANDES, Ecuador).
