Cutoff urinary cotinine and cotinine/creatinine in children
Abstract:
Urinary cotinine is best suited biomarker for assessing exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), however the cutoff to establish the exposure is not well defined in the literature and there is no consensus on the matter, which affects the effective evaluation to ETS exposure in children. The objective of this work is the proposal of a cutoff for urinary cotinine determined by high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detector. Parents and/or guardians of 80 children were interviewed, 44 exposed and 36 not exposed in a community in the municipality Naguanagua, aged 3-12 years. Spot urine sample was used to determine biomarker and cotinine/creatinine ratio (C/C). Nonparametric statistics was used. The discriminatory power of the biomarker was established using a ROC curve (receiver Operating Characteristic) and Youden's ratio was calculated. Results show higher concentrations of cotinine …
