Data harvesting from devices that support the snmp protocol: A practical approach

Abstract:

Currently, data networks generate a large amount of information related to their status and operation. This information is very important in order to improve performance and network security. Most of the well-known solutions for data harvesting use the SYSLOG protocol. However, there are network elements, which do not provide detailed information through this protocol, so it is necessary to propose alternatives, such as SNMP. No related works addressing SNMP based protocol solutions were found. This article presents a practical implementation of data harvesting using the SNMP protocol. The implemented scripts and the results of the data harvesting validation are presented.
