Delimitación de las zonas amenazadas por lahares en el drenaje occidental del Nevado Cayambe
Abstract:
Delimitation of lahar hazard zones in the western drainages of Cayambe volcano: Cayambe is an active volcano located in the Cordillera Real. The city of Cayambe, which has~ 39.000 inhabitants, extends along the western’s flank. Since mid-2016 signs of volcanic unrest have been recorded by the Instituto Geofísico (IG). Additionally,“andinistas” have reported sulfur smell and new crevasses in the volcano. These evidences have alerted the authorities and community. The first Hazard Map of Cayambe was published in 2002 and it broadly represented an eruptive scenario that occurred in 1570. Nowadays, new DEM as well as improved computational tools allow us to perform more reliable simulations about volcanic phenomena and thus obtain detailed results. Both, pyroclastic flows and lahars have been modelled using the most probably eruptive scenario as 2002 map, on a 10m-and-4m pixel DEM and using the code VolcFlow. Finally, we have obtained a new, more detailed lahar hazard map, which has been validated with fieldwork.
