Deployable Networks. An Alternative for Communications in Critical Environments

Abstract:

One of the main problems that arise when disaster strikes is the little or no communication that usually exists within the affected area. For an effective incident management, is imperative that the tactical staff deployed within the affected area maintain permanent communication, both among themselves (for security and support issues) and with the strategic staff located outside the risk area (responsible for command and control of operations). This paper introduces the concept of Deployable Networks (DNETs), referring to those communication networks that are autonomous, portable, resilient, highly scalable, but above all, that can be implemented quickly and where and when they are needed. A prototype with a dynamic mesh type network topology was designed and implemented, based on IEEE 802.11s (wireless net) technology, obtaining effective results in terms of communications and information exchange between the nodes that make up the net.
