Abstract:
The spread of non-persistent virus epidemics is dictated by the epidemiological triangle: the pathogen, the host and the environment. There is a fourth factor involved in plant viruses: the vectors. The interaction among these four factors is of ultimate importance in the buildup of epidemics and in selection of the measures for control. In order to analyze vector-borne epidemics, there is a need to monitor the factors which axe involved in the spread and then to calculate their individual contribution to the epidemic. The relative importance of vectors in virus spread in peppers, cucurbits and tobacco has been established. Monitoring techniques for determination of vector activity and number have been developed. The monitoring approaches include: determination of flying and landing rates and vectorial potential of major aphid species throughout the season.
