Desarrollo de línea base de material particulado y gases atmosféricos generados en cocinas artesanales y mejoradas de la comunidad Tsáchila el poste, Santo Domingo

Abstract:

Ecuador is a country where the use of wood even today is representative; and projects developed to design strategies to tackle the problems related to indoor air pollution are low. This paper aims to develop a base line of particulate matter and carbon monoxide generated in handmade and improved kitchens in the Tsáchila community called El Poste, located in the province of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas; this to assess the concentrations obtained before and after the implementation of improved stoves and also to compare the results achieved with guideline values established by international organizations and reference values found in similar studies. Data collection took place in 17 homes of the area, with the develop of three atmospheric monitoring carried out as follows: two monitoring of 1 hour, in artisanal kitchens (first monitoring) and in improved stoves (third monitoring), and a continuous monitoring with a period of approximately 4 hours, done in six houses with the highest concentrations recorded in the first measurement (second monitoring). The parameters measured were: maximum particulate matter (Pmmax), particulate matter level (Pmprom) and carbon monoxide (CO).The concentrations obtained in artisanal stoves are situated within typical pollution levels into a “microenvironment”; while the measurements in improved stoves showed a reduction of 38.14 percent in the presence of Pmmax and Pmprom, and decrease of about 97 percent in the CO concentration.
