Describing and managing uncertainty of categorical maps in GIS

Abstract:

This paper presents a method for describing and managing uncertainty in digital data from categorical maps. Although information on uncertainty is integral to the use of digital map data and can be used to calculate the quality of information derived through GIS processing, the absence of established methods and easy access to data quality descriptors for categorical data input to GIS means that quality of output is seldom estimated even for simple GIS operations. The method presented addresses this issue by describing some uncertainties in categorical data qualitatively and integrating the descriptors into spatial databases so that they can be used in GIS processing. -from Authors
