Description of postsurgical complications of diverticular disease, Luis Vernaza hospital, Guayaquil-Ecuador, 2015-2016

Abstract:

Introduction: diverticular disease of the colon has an important prevalence worldwide, being this pathology treated conservatively through medications or through a surgical management, which could be through a conventional or laparoscopic technique, both processes being related to postsurgical complications, as described above, the objective of this study was to describe patients with colonic diverticulitis and postsurgical complications that developed. Materials and methods: this was a descriptive, observational, retrospective cross-sectional study that was carried out in 45 patients older than 40 years with a diagnosis of diverticulitis of the colon and who had been treated surgically in the Luis Vernaza Hospital, the data were presented through counts and percentages and expressed in tables. Results: the predominant age in patients with complications was 61 to 75 years (40%), the male sex was 51.1%, in reference to comorbidities 86.7% reported having some, 80% underwent surgery of conventional type and 20% by laparosco-py, the most frequent complications were the early ones with hemorrhage with 26.7% and sepsis with 24.4%, while in late stages the most frequent complication was fistulas (15.6%) followed by the hernia with 6.7%. Conclusions: the complications of colon diverticulitis surgery are diverse, so preventive measures must be taken when identifying the diagnosis, as well as the adequate risk stratification to decide the therapeutic behavior to follow.
