Design and Implementation of an IoT-Based Electric Power Smart Meter for Monitoring and Control at Home Level

Abstract:

The following research is oriented to the design and implementation of an Internet-based Smart Meter (SM) of Things (IoT). The method is defined by the configuration of elements that make up the SM and their respective communication protocols. The main module for the IoT is the Raspberry Pi card, current and voltage sensors, signal conditioners, a computer, and mobile device to receive information through a web server and a database. The results are based on sensor calibration and signal conditioning. In the Python programming language, voltage and current values are obtained and, depending on the sampling time, power, energy, and cost data. Using XAMPP, a database is created in MySQL, an Apache web server in the local network, and in PHP programming the web pages, showing the values hosted in the database. Using Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) programming, data is transferred to the real-time access forms (RT) of the SM, which, through JavaScript, create dynamic and intuitive graphic interfaces for the user, allowing for power management. Finally, to send and receive information in the cloud, Ngrok is used, a tool that allows access to the local server from any device connected to the Internet. The SM linked to the visualization platform allows user interaction through graphical interfaces to the Web server, database, and vice versa, also, control an intelligent outlet to help manage electricity consumption.
