Design and construction of a single-phase axial flux and PM generator for low power wind turbines applications
Abstract:
The use of wind energy as a resource for electrical generation has been increasing, also the technologies used to develop profitable and efficient designs. For low powers, the axial flow permanent magnet (AFPM) generator is widely used for its simplicity of design, construction, low cost, and sufficient generation at low speeds. In this project, a single-phase (AFPM) generator was designed and develop to for characterization tests. The method started with the availability of the wind resource, a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT), the magnetic characteristics of the PMs with finite elements simulations studies, the geometry of the generator and other design characteristics. In the characterization stage, tests were carried out without load and with load to observe the behavior of voltage and current as a function of the speed. Finally, the design is verified by acceptable results for small-scale generation and the possibility of alternatives on the design.
