Achievements and challenges of community media in Venezuela under the bolivarian revolution

Abstract:

This research describes the current situation of the community media in Venezuela during Bolivarian Revolution period (1999-2018). A total of 280 telephone surveys were made to the main spokespersons of the selected community media. The results obtained allow us to conclude that the legal and institutional framework built during the last years has been decisive in the increase of community media in the Caribbean country; However, this same framework poses limitations and risks for the independence and self-determination of these community media. An important sector has generated self-financing mechanisms that counteract the aforementioned risks in practice. Likewise, the inquired community media have an informative agenda that differs from the hegemonic commercial media, although they still show gaps in terms of participation.
