Design and manufacturing of surgical instruments for the placement of biomedical devices in metacarpal bones

Abstract:

The purpose of the present study was to design and to build a prototype of a tool to facilitate the insertion and later locked of a intramedullary nail to be used in surgeries whose main purpose is to reduce and to stabilize first metacarpal bone diaphysaries fractures. This system is an innovative design conformed by four pieces that are coupled with nail in an appropriate way. On one hand we have the insertion handle, the cylindrical guides and the connector, built in AISI 420 steel and the directional handle, manufactured in A356 aluminum alloy. For the manufacture of the final prototype, was necessary to establish sequences and machining parameters. It was also indispensable to carry out experimental tests to validate the functionality of the system.
