Design of High-Gain Antennas for 5G Systems Using Characteristic Modes

Abstract:

This paper proposes the use of the Theory of Characteristic Modes to aid the design of high-gain antennas for 5G applications. The single-layer lens consists of two shorted metallic rings illuminated by a square aperture which behaves as a novel Fabry-Perot resonator antenna. The proposed antenna has been optimized, obtaining a large S 11 bandwidth, and a maximum directivity of 14.60 dBi in the range of 19.5 to 22 GHz.
