Design of a mHealth device for Peak Expiratory Flow Measurement
Abstract:
Access to health care today is literally in your hand. Mobile health devices are often developed to monitor a specific health disorder. Among the most concerning health disorders, there are respiratory diseases, including asthma that produces obstructions on the airways and a considerable reduction in the respiratory flow. Peak Expiratory Flow - PEF measure allows an acute and rapid estimation of airflow limitation. This article proposes the design and implementation of a low-cost device for PEF estimation based on a turbine sensor, also includes a universal serial bus connection to an Android smartphone for data visualization. Finally, a comparative study to evaluate the performance of the device against a commercial one was made. The result was an error of under 0.57%.
