Design of an external fixator for wrist

Abstract:

The following study is intended to develop the design of an external fixator for the wrist used in treatment of distal radius fractures in adults. To implement the design was evaluated the external fixation device, Schanz screws and bone, together. The loading was applied to second metacarpal and distal region displacements were restricted. The stress distribution in various load conditions, such as tension, compression, bending and torsion were simulated using the Finite Element Method (FEM) using Abaqus / CAE v6.8-4. The results obtained from the model analyzed show that for the given configuration of the external fixator, the highest concentration of efforts for loads in tension, compression and bending occurs in bars.
