Destructive water treatment technologies for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)

Abstract:

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of synthetic chemicals possessing remarkable properties including oil and water repellency, chemical stability, and heat resistance [1]. They have been used in a broad range of applications such as firefighting foams, electronic and semiconductor device manufacturing, photolithography, aviation industry, household products, and food packaging. To date, more than 3,000 compounds have been identified as part of the PFAS family [2]. However, despite their applicability in multiple fields, PFAS are non-biodegradable and persist in nature. Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid and perfluorooctane carboxylic acid are two of the most widely used PFAS, and both constitute the final nonbiodegradable products after the degradation of commercial products containing PFAS. In this chapter, we will analyze the chemistry behind PFAS and different technologies investigated for the destruction of PFAS within the green chemistry scope.
