Detection of oligocilia arising from smooth muscle cells of leiomyosarcoma and bilharzial ureters

Abstract:

Dear Sir: In examinations of the fine structure of leiomyosarcomas and bilharzial ureters from Saudi patients, several single and double cilia were frequently encountered in smooth muscle cells (SMCs) from leiomyosarcomas arising from the stomach (Fig. 1) and pelvis (Fig. 2) and metastatic to the dura mater (Fig. 3) as well as from nonneoplastic SMCs of the lower segment of bilharzial ureters (Fig. 4). In the leiomyosarcoma from the stomach, small superficial single cilia were detected in many polygonal rather than spindle-shaped SMCs (Fig. 1). The cell cytoplasm contained many mitochondria as its main feature; microfilaments were rarely seen. Each cilium was apparently arising from a single centriole, which was giving rise a pair of daughter centrioles, or procentrioles; these were seen to elongate at a right angle to the parent centriole, forming the cilium basal body (CBB). Because the cells were closely abutting …
