Abstract:

Hedyosmum racemosum is a dioecious plant growing on medium-high elevations, the essential oil was extracted from the aerial parts of specimens from females by hydrodistillation. The chemical composition of the essential oil was determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry GC/EM and the flame ionization detector GC/FID. The biological activity was evaluated by the broth microdilution method and was expressed as minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs). The antioxidant activity was investigated by free radical scavenging assay using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) and ABTS+. Oil physical properties were also determined. Forty-seven compounds were identified, representing 99.67% of the oil. Major constituents were α-Pinene (5.43%), α-Phellandrene (26.47%), Limonene (3.36%), (Z)-β-Ocimene (4.25%), Linalool (3, 51%), Estragole (16.97%), Methyl eugenol (5.99%), and D-Germacrene (10.34%). The density of the essential oil was 0.9038 g/cm3 and the refractive index was 1.4883. The oil showed activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae (MIC 250 ug/mL), 6 while the remaining bacteria and T. rubrum T. mentagrophytes and fungi were not inhibited at the highest dose tested. The essential oil of this species shows good antioxidant activity by both methods with TEAC values of 47, 66 μmol/gr.
