Etiological determination of otitis in canine patients from the Metropolitan District of Quito - Ecuador
Abstract:
The present study had the purpose of establishing the most common etiological agents of otic disease, through different diagnostic methods: videotoscopy, cytology, bacteriological and fungal culture to thirty-five dogs with atrial disease at the All Pets® Veterinary Hospital of the city Quito. These patients were grouped according to several characteristics to analyze the different factors that are probably influencing their development. The analysis of the results showed that the most frequent etiologic agents in otitis were Staphylococcus epidermidis (74.29%) and Malassezia spp. (65.71%). It was also determined that the mixed infection with the greatest presence is the combination of S. epidermidis with Malassezia spp., 31.43% of the total cases. Among the predisposing factors that affect the disease are the breed and ear type, the most affected being the Labrador Retriever (17.14%) and the pendulum ear type (51.43%). The habitat was shown to have a significant effect on otitis, since 75.29% of the patients are in external areas. Finally the presence of Trichopyton mentagrophitys and Pseudomona spp in 2 patients was demonstrated.
