Determination of Oxygen in Steel by the Leco Oxygen Analyser

Abstract:

The development of sampling and analysis of liquid steel for oxygen determination is briefly reviewed as a prelude to a detailed description of the Leco oxygen analyser applied to the determination of oxygen in steel for the control of the vacuum degassing operation. Oxygen values were obtained in approximately 6min (2 1/2min for sample preparation and 3 1/2min for analysis), and were in close agreement with the accepted vacuum fusion techniques. Information on the oxygen content of liquid steel is of paramount importance in commercial steelmaking. This applies in particular to the oxygen present in the steel towards the end of refining, as this must be removed by suitable additions of deoxidizing agents. Where, on the other band, a modern vacuum degassing plant is in use, rapid oxygen determinations may be used in conjunction with other relevant analyses, for operational control and to provide information …
