Development of an Experimental Optical Camera Communication Research Setup

Abstract:

In this paper, we present the development of trans-mitter and receiver equipment for optical camera communication (OCC) and the operation of these systems in laboratory settings intended to be used for research and educational purposes. The hardware design and processing algorithms developed are published with this work in an online repository, and can be used for training students and introducing them to the field of OCC. The experimental design presented in this work is intended to exploit applications of OCC to the Internet of things and wireless sensor networks, in which a camera-based receiver can perform simultaneous video capture and communication (downlink) from a single or multiple light-emitting diode-based transmitter. The hardware utilized is open-source and inexpensive, and its versa-tility is shown in various scenarios, including laboratory and real outdoor settings.
