Development of semisolid preparations for topical delivery of epidermal growth factor
Abstract:
Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is an endogenous protein of 53 amino acids residues isolated from submaxilar mice glands and of known healing effects. One of the most important factors influencing therapeutical effectivity in topical administration of EGF is the necessity of prolonged activation of EGF cellular receptor and stabilization against proteases particularly for burn lesions. Six semisolid formulations were evaluated for prolonged kinetic release profiles of the molecule, as possible candidates for EGF topical administration. The effects of chemical composition and physical properties of each variant were evaluated on EGF release rate and permeability in vitro through intact abdominal pigskin.
