Diabetes and pregnancy

Abstract:

Fixty six pregnant patients with diabetes mellitus are studied. The cases were obtained from 14.105 deliveries recorded in the Gynecology and Obstetrics Department of Hospital Universitario del Valle, Cali, Colombia, during a two year period. Following P. White's classification, 73.2% were classified as Type A, of which 70.7% were subclassified as Type A1 (29 patients). 57.1% of the patients were less than 30 years old and the remaining 40.9% were between 31 and 44 years old. Maternal mortality was not recorded. In 8.9% of the cases, the disease was related to pre-eclampsia; this figure is considerably lower than the 30% of the general obstetrics population of the same level. Fetal mortality was 89.2 per thousand, 60% of which were still-borns. A1 gestational diabetics showed a higher tendency to an excessive increase in weight. The figures for family diabetes background, still-borns and perinatal deaths were 44.8%, 31% and 24.1%, respectively. The Caesarean operation rate increased from 15% to 66.6% in Types A2 and C; 42.8% in Type A1 and 30% in Type B.
