Diagnostic Electron Microscopy and Immunohistochemistry Part I: Neoplastic Diseases
Abstract:
There has been much progress in the development of ancillary diagnostic techniques in Anatomic Pathology in the past 50 years. Histochemical and ultrastructural methods preceded the development of flow-cytometry and immunohistochemistry, revolutionizing the way diagnostic problems were approached by pathologists. The existing paradigm years ago, in which the most experienced pathologist rendered a final diagnosis in controversial cases, which was unconditionally accepted by peers, became fallible. The new diagnostic techniques became available to test probable diagnoses suggested by the most experienced. In a way, the ancillary techniques served at times as an “equalizer” between experienced and less mature pathologists.
