Dignifying and Decolonizing Queer Histories in Ecuador: In the fight for LGBTQI+ rights and reparations, undoing centuries of transphobia calls for uplifting pre-colonial …
Abstract:
Purita Pelayo, also known as Alberto Cabral, is one of the transgender activists who led the struggle for the decriminalization of homosexuality in Ecuador, won in 1997. Now, she has a greater goal, as ambitious as it is just: a public apology and indemnification for the state-sanctioned injuries and harassment suffered by trans people in the country, especially in the 1980s. In the 1980s and 1990s, physical and psychological mistreatment of non-normative people at the hands of the police was a common practice. Among these groups, trans people were easy victims, given their inability to go unnoticed. Any pretext served as justification, and the mistreatment ranged from insults and humiliation to beatings, unlawful detention, torture, rape, forced disappearance, and murder.
