Direct seeding with native trees in south central Ecuador: enhancing restoration potential with local knowledge


Abstract:

Cost-efficient strategies to reestablish native trees are critically needed in the rural Andes of Ecuador where financial resources are limited and restoration needs are great. This study discusses aspect of seed ecology for selected native trees focused on direct seeding applications. A farmer-oriented approach was embedded in our scientific method, allowing for an effective selection of species, seed handling techniques, site preparation methods and appropriate seed sowing windows. This approach allowed for rapid development of direct-seeding technology adapted to rural setting in inter-Andean valleys. Native species were selected for the environmental and social benefits they provide. These were initially tested in laboratory conditions and temporal patterns of germination and imbibition are described.
