Adakites from Ecuador: preliminary data

Abstract:

All the rocks from 12 Quaternary Ecuadorian volcanoes (286 new analyses) show an adakitic signature, more or less obvious depending on the series. This signature could result from the partial melting of metamorphosed basaltic material (MORB and/or arc basalt) at the base of the continental crust, triggered by magmas rising from the mantle. Here a preliminary petrogenetic model is proposed, which explains the main geochemical features of the Ecuadorian arc volcanics.There is an abridged English version.
