Addison's Disease
Abstract:
The term 'Addison's disease' is synonymous with primary adrenal insufficiency. In Addison's days, the most common etiology was infectious adrenal destruction, usually due to tuberculosis. Among the many etiologies, autoimmune adrenalitis is the most common form in developed countries, but infectious, infiltrative, genetic, and traumatic forms also occur. The diagnosis is based on low serum cortisol and aldosterone in the face of high-plasma adrenocorticotropin and renin, either basal or after cosyntropin stimulation. Treatment consists of glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid replacement for life, with increased doses during severe physical stress or illness.
