Additive strategies for enhanced anaerobic digestion for bioenergy and biochemicals
Abstract:
Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a promising technology to treat organic waste and achieve resource recovery such as bioenergy and biochemicals. However, the AD system generally needs some strengthening strategies due to its poor system stability and low reactor efficiency. The additive strategy is a standard measure that could enhance AD performance quickly and efficiently. Nevertheless, how to choose an appropriate additive and/or how to use additives more effectively is a challenge to the decision makers. Therefore, in this chapter, a brief description of the basic concept of the AD process and the additives used in AD, including iron-based materials, carbon-based materials, biological materials for bioenergy and biochemicals recovery are introduced. Furthermore, this chapter concludes with in-depth discussions of the primary mechanism behind the additive strategies to enhance the AD performance more efficiently.
