Distinction by sex in the role of the professor as a researcher and its implications in the professional burnout

Abstract:

In recent years, studies on women's participation in different contexts have revealed the differences between the opportunities that men and women have. Higher education institutions, including their science and engineering departments, are no exception. The present study, used the findings provided by Maslach and Jackson, regarding the "burnout syndrome" and its relation to academic performance, with a differentiating approach between men and women. Statistical methods such as factor analysis, CHAID, T tests, among others, were applied. The results showed how, within an institution of higher education, even when women were better evaluated academically, they were assigned fewer research hours than men. Likewise, women showed higher degrees of depersonalization and / or emotional exhaustion. The study showed other important differences in this context, between male and female faculty. Also, the reasons why it is necessary to increase the number of female professors in the STEM fields are explained.
