Dystopia as an emerging issue in the XXI century narrative. Case study: The Handmaid’s Tale
Abstract:
The rise of authoritarian parties in many countries throughout the world, is causing the loss of rights and freedoms of the population. Films and fiction series, although they belong to the fantasy genre, are not alien to the society in which they are conceived. At present, many dystopian titles are being released that can be interpreted as a reflection of the current socio-political situation. This article analyses the first season of the series The Handmaid’s Tale. The story tells the life of June, a woman who loses her dignity by being objectified for her sexual condition, after the arrival of an ultra-conservative party to government. Attention will be paid to the narrative, in order to delimit the identity problems and the loss of rights of the less privileged of the society of “Gilead”, with the justification of maintaining security and order.
