E-health in Ecuador: Experiences and good practice

Abstract:

In recent years, the expansion of Information and Communication Technologies has led to the diversification of new forms of content production through so-called virtual platforms. Multiple categories and denominations pertaining to scientific processes and knowledge have emerged in cyberspace, and one of the leading topics in this field is Ehealth, as an interdisciplinary dialogue between the health sciences and the field of social communication. However, a review of relevant academic journals and specialized platforms shows there has been little research into this subject in Latin America and the Caribbean. The present study was aimed at discussing past and current E-health practices in Ecuador. The research was qualitative and based on the method of content analysis, supported by a literature review of relevant documentary and virtual sources. The results highlight several web platforms pertaining to health institutions, bodies, hospitals, associations or charitable foundations, the contents of which prioritize the promotion and prevention of public health, and provide tools which encourage and streamline the health processes used both by medical professionals and the general public. The study concluded by setting out the key areas of E-health in which Ecuador lags behind, beginning with the need to design more up-to-date strategies and programs adapted to the social and cultural realities of the country. The referenced sources consulted were 19 specialized platforms, organizations, bodies and health centers in Ecuador, in addition to 6 digital sites carrying academic articles related to the object of study.
