ECHINOCOCCOSIS, AN IMPORTANT ZOONOSISCANINE

Abstract:

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), caused by the dog tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus (EG), accounts for more than 3 million cases of human echinococcal infections worldwide and is a major public health problem in many countries. The life cycle of this cestode parasite requires a definitive carnivorous host, usually dogs, and an intermediate host such as domestic or wild cattle. The objective of this research was to substantiate the main aspects of the effects of canine echinococcosis as a Zoonosis that should not be neglected by public health authorities. A review of articles published in Spanish and English in indexed journals such as Elsevier, Scielo, Pubmed and Scimago was carried out, which allowed the knowledge obtained re-garding canine Echinococcosis, its incidence, epidemiology, prevention measures and prophylaxis. Human echinococcosis may be grossly underdiagnosed, due to the chronic nature of the disease and the inability of patients to seek care at large referral hospitals in different regions of the world. Therefore, community studies using serology and diagnostic imaging are needed to better elaborate the frequency of infection in the population.
