ET-based Irrigation System with Automated Bird Deterrent System

Abstract:

In urban households such as houses and condominiums in the city, there are a lot of cases where people waste huge amount of clean water in irrigating plants. Siling Labuyo is a common spice in the Philippines and apparently, birds are one of the few who can eat Siling Labuyo Peppers in urban areas. This paper tackles the use of a Raspberry Pi model 3B+ to control an automated irrigation system with a bird deterrent system. The irrigation system is based on evapotranspiration referenced by the Penman-Monteith equation. It estimates the net evapotranspiration using solar radiation, temperature, humidity, and wind speed as parameters. It aims to determine the significance of the system when it comes to the total number of fruits produced per plant in a span of 6 weeks. Image processing was used for the bird detection, Opencv was used for object detection, using a trained Haar cascade model in order to detect birds. While a rotating red light was used for the bird deterrence. The Raspberry Pi controls the water flow for the irrigation system and the switching of the light for the bird deterrent system. This paper concludes that: the ET-based irrigation system does not affect the number of fruits produced by the plant as compared to the usage of the traditional irrigation system, the ET-based irrigation system saved 15931.7238 mL of water compared to the traditional irrigation system, and the rotating red light was an effective way to deter the Eurasian tree sparrow "Maya"birds.
