Advances in the Application of Cognitive Work Analysis
Abstract:
Introduction After more than three decades of interest in cognitive systems engineering, and in the 10 years since Vicente’s (1999) book on Cognitive Work Analysis (CWA) was published, there has been an increasing interest in applying the specific techniques of cognitive work analysis to the analysis and design of complex, human-technology systems. Despite this increased interest, there are few (if any) published accounts other than the analyses in the above-mentioned book that use all of the recommended five phases of cognitive work analysis. Most example applications focus on phases of work domain analysis and control task analysis, which are the phases with the most well-developed and theoretically informed models. There have been fewer examples of CWA methods for strategies analysis, social-organizational analysis, and worker skills and competencies analysis perhaps because the tools and models.
