Economic and social impacts of national mining policies in Ecuador (2000-2006)
Abstract:
The national political reforms implemented to establish metallic mining at the beginning of the century caused a series of multidimensional impacts in Ecuador. The aim of this article is to analyze these national mining policies and their repercussions in the economic and social field during the period 2000- 2006. For this, a documentary-descriptive study of the economic and social impacts caused by the analysis of the reforms in the Trole 2 Law, the sectoral statistics of the Central Bank of Ecuador and interviews with local authorities was carried out. The results show that the implemented state policies did not fulfill the proposed goals, rather, in praxis they were contradictory with the discourse of reactivating Ecuador's economy and, at a social level, they established themselves as dynamizers of social unrest. It is concluded that the impacts of policies that seek an economy dependent on their natural resources, should serve to maintain the demand for political changes in favor of a new type of governance between state and local.
