Ecuador and the Middle East: Counter-Hegemony, Anti-interventionism and Sovereign Wealth Funds


Abstract:

The article reviews Ecuador’s relationship with the Middle East, taking into account multiple levels of analysis: domestic, state, regional and international. It highlights Ecuador´s oscillations between an ideological foreign policy linked to the Correa government’s leftist identity and pragmatism associated with the needs of Ecuador’s primary economy. The article looks at several cases, Ecuador’s engagement with Iran, its positioning toward the Arab Spring and relations with the Gulf Monarchies and Israel.
