Efectiveness of Albendazol sulfoxide incorporated in a molasses urea block for the control of gastrointestinal parasites in cattle infected under grazing conditions

Abstract:

The effectiveness of the Albendazole Sulfoxide, incorporated in a molasses urea block for controlling gastrointestinal nematodes in cattle was evaluated by using 26 bovines infected under natural conditions. Animals were coproscopically (MacMaster Technique and sobresaturated salt solution as flotation liquid) examined prior, during and after block consumption. Cattle had continuous access to molasses block containing Albendazole Sulfoxide from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m., during 11 weeks. The date were analyzed by mean of one-way variance analysis. Statistical differences were found in e.p.g counts when the animals were fed with and without the block. The use of the Albendazole Sulfoxide resulted in a drastically reduction of the percentage of infected animals, with an 88% reduction in eggs output. Recommendations are made in order to use this method for controlling Strongylida infections in grazing cattle.
