Agile management for research groups: An exploratory study

Abstract:

Research groups in academic environments face many challenges when it comes to effectively managing the development of their projects, since they are mostly conformed by students and professors that commonly work in several projects at once. To mitigate the underlying difficulties and to improve the performance of research groups, the application of agile methodologies has been suggested to manage the development of research projects in the software development area. Contributing to get better insights about the specificities related to works exercised by research groups, this article presents the results of an exploratory study conducted at an Ecuadorian university. Specifically, the study focuses on identifying how they are formed, the methodologies and tools used, and the difficulties that researchers must cope with. Suggestions are offered in terms of concrete actions oriented to improve the performance of university research groups.
