Effect Of 7 Versus 14 Days Of Antibiotic Therapy On Symptom Resolution Among Afebrile Men With Urinary Tract Infection
Abstract:
Introduction: Determining the optimal duration of treatment for common infectious diseases is an important strategy to preserve the efficacy of antibiotics. Objective: To determine if 7 days of treatment is not less than 14 days when using ciprofloxacin or trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole to treat urinary tract infection in afebrile men. Method: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, noninferiority trial of afebrile men with suspected symptomatic UTI. Results: The prespecified primary outcome was resolution of UTI symptoms 14 days after completion of active antibiotic treatment. Conclusions: Among afebrile men with suspected UTI, treatment with ciprofloxacin or trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole for 7 days was not less than 14 days of treatment.
