Agranulocytosis and fever seven weeks after starting abacavir
Abstract:
Abacavir is a carbocyclic nucleoside analogue that belongs to the nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor class of antiretroviral drugs [1]. Its most important side-effect is a hypersensitivity reaction occurring in 3% of cases [2–6]. We present here details of a patient who developed agranulocytosis 7 weeks after starting abacavir. After the diagnosis of acute HIV infection a 33-year-old male patient started with didanosine enteric-coated 400 mg a day, lamivudine 150 mg twice a day, abacavir 300 mg twice a day, indinavir 800 mg twice a day, ritonavir 100 mg twice a day and nevirapine 200 mg twice a day (after a 2 week lead-in of 200 mg a day).
