Effect of adding essential oil compounds in diets for intensive beef production on in vitro barley fermentation.
Abstract:
Fermentation of barley, alone or with three levels of essential oil compounds (eugenol, cinnamaldehyde and a commercial mixture) was assayed in vitro in a low-buffered medium with rumen inoculum from beef steers. Eugenol did not affect gas production from barley but increased pH at 24 h (P< 0.05), whereas cinnamaldehyde linearly reduced gas volume (P< 0.001) but did not affect pH. Inclusion of a mixture of essential oils increased gas production and dry matter disappearance (P< 0.01), while linearly increased incubation pH at 24 h (P= 0.03). Use of essential oil compounds depends on the objectives established, since their effect largely differ among the nature of the compounds used.
