Effect of antimicrobial use guidelines on antimicrobial utilization by first and second year medical residents at the UERMMMC.
Abstract:
A previous point-in-time prevalence study of antimicrobial use at the UERMMMC showed inappropriate use in 44 percent of all hospital antimicrobial prescriptions. A two-phase study of antimicrobial utilization at the Medical Service Ward of the UERMMMC by first and second year medical residents was undertaken to determine the effect of an antimicrobial use guidelines proposed by the Infectious Diseases Service and approved for implementation by the Executive Committee of the Department of Medicine. Antimicrobial prescriptions for patients admitted May 1994 were reviewed and the percentage of inappropriate use noted. Subsequently, patients admitted to the service ward from August to October 1994 after the antimicrobial use guidelines were instituted, were followed up and the percentage of inappropriate use was noted.
