Effect of effluents of sugar industry on soil amylase and invertase activity
Abstract:
The effect of effluents of sugar industry on the activities of amylase and invertase in soil samples were studied. Discharge of effluents from sugar industry alters the physico-chemical, biological and enzymatic properties of soil. Activities of enzymes such as amylase and invertase were relatively higher in soil contaminated with effluents than control soil. Enzyme activities were measured by the addition of substrates starch for amylase and sucrose for invertase to soil samples and accumulation of hydrolytic product glucose formed from substrates in the soil was estimated at periodic intervals. Direct discharge of effluents are nontoxic or stimulatory to amylase and invertase activities in polluted and non polluted soils at all incubations. Moreover soils treated at higher concentration (100%) of effluents inhibited the activities of amylase and invertase, where as at lower concentration (10%), the activities were stimulated over control. © Global Science Publications.
