Effect of leaf extract neem (Azadirachta indica) for controlling ectoparasites in dogs

Abstract:

The objective of this research was to determine the effect of neem leaf extract in controlling ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus) and fleas (Ctenocephalides canis) in dogs. Treatments concentrations neem leaf extract of 0, 50, 100 and 150 grams were evaluated in dogs with abundant hair and fur little. Animals were coated with different concentrations and on days 7, 14 and 21 the residual effect of the bath was evaluated. A completely random design was used with four replicates per treatment. The mean differences were pooled using Tukey's test at 5% probability. The results indicate that neem leaf extract, statistically influenced, in control of ticks and fleas on dogs. In the A4B2 (150 gr of neem leaf extract + dogs with short hair) treatment a decrease of 4% of live ticks relative to baseline (57 ticks per dog) was observed. Similarly a decrease of 12% of live fleas in relation to the average found at the beginning of the experiment (149 fleas per dog) was found. It can be conclude that neem leaf extract had a favorable response in the control of ectoparasites in dogs.
